Kung Fu - Round 1

As always Master (Sifu) Bruce's classes were fun and informative. We went over basic stances, blocks, strikes and kicks as well as some meditative exercises/techniques. He designed a special curriculum just for out group focused on improving health, wellness and everyday life. I'm looking forward to the class on using pressure points for healing.

Hope to see everyone there tonight!

Sweet Potatoes

It turns out sweet potatoes are a superfood and have the highest nutritional value of all vegetables.

"In 1992, the Center for Science in the Public Interest compared the nutritional value of sweet potatoes to other vegetables. Considering fibre content, complex carbohydrates, protein, vitamins A and C, iron, and calcium, the sweet potato ranked highest in nutritional value. According to these criteria, sweet potatoes earned 184 points, 100 points over the next on the list, the common potato.(NCSPC)"

Week 4

Monday.... The start of week 4. Balance is the secret of life!
Monday, Monday....it is the hardest day of the week. I don't have an issue any other day - but on Mondays, I want to keep hitting that snooze button. Using willpower I didn't realize I possessed, I got up & headed to the gym this morning.
11/17/10 - annual dental checkup completed as one of my field events.
Also attended Lunch & Learn with Dr. Axe and bought the cookbook.
On Friday, I went shopping - replacing bad fats/oils with good ones like coconut oil, etc. ready to start eating more organic.

Information on Burning Fat

I found some interesting information on burning fat and thought that I would share it. I've been doing something similar and so far I've lost 12 pounds since we went for the screening at the YMCA.

First figure up how many calories your body requires to maintain itself:
Women

Men

Then figure up your body fat % if you don't already know it:
Body Fat Calculator

Then figure up how many pounds of fat you have by multiplying your body weight by your body fat percentage:
(In my case) 184 x .14 = 25.76

Then multiply the pounds of fat by 31 to get the amount of calories your body can provide daily from your stored fat:
25.76 x 31 = 798.56

Now deduct this from the calories you need to maintain your current weight:
2,080 - 798.56 = 1,281.44

So, using these results you can safely consume the resulting amount of calories without adverse effects like muscle loss and simply burn some of your fat instead. If you begin to exercise more often or rigorously or you start losing weight eventually you'll need to rerun the numbers again.

In addition to this, there was a study done 80 years ago which determined that there are 3 different basic body types all of which require different amounts of proteins, carbs and fat. The percentages for each and information about the different requirements for each body types can be found at the following links:
